Do we still have Block Watch in Lions Bay and why does it matter?
In 2021 Lions Bay joined Block Watch in its own right after an earlier arrangement ended. In 2022 a new volunteer took on this important and longstanding village initiative.
Traditionally, Block Watch in Lions Bay has also been a vital part of the emergency notification system: Block Captains were tasked with sharing information and updates during emergencies.
In a 2023 Emergency Program Committee meeting concerns were raised that the Block Watch program appeared to have collapsed but should be revived as a critical element of the emergency network. The volunteer Block Watch Coordinator stepped down the following day and as a result the program is no longer in operation in Lions Bay.
A quick search of the Block Watch website shows Lions Bay is no longer a member and municipal reports show staff has not paid membership fees to the organization during this council term.
Emergencies aside, this also means residents can no longer claim the Block Watch discount on their homeowners’ insurance.
If you would like to see Block Watch revived in Lions Bay or are willing to take on the program as a volunteer write to council@lionsbay.ca.
